Planning ahead and organizing what to eat and when is always going to set you up for success. I’ve been instructing an intense boot-camp style class that has a nutrition component and accountability the last 7 weeks, and meal planning and journaling is a big part of eating healthy. It’s helped me get back on the planning wagon and I’ve loved it!
Having our weekly schedule in front of me helps decide what we will eat on which nights of the week. For example, if Matt has a late meeting and won’t be home until 6:30pm, I know a crockpot meal would work best that day! Or if we have somewhere to go right after dinner, I do a one-pot meal so it’s easy clean up and we can get out the door!
It’s pretty basic- it has each day of the week across the top, then down the side I have listed each meal and snack throughout the day. I also added workout at the bottom. When I plan ahead and decide before the day-of when I’m going to workout, I exercise more frequently. If I decide the same day if I’m going to workout and when, then I push it back and we do other things. This way, it’s on my list and since it’s already planned I feel like I need to do it!
Then I start plugging things in. We have several options for breakfast each morning, and so it can rotate or change depending on what everyone wants to eat in the mornings! But overall we stick to around the same things. Sometimes I feel like cooking chicken sausage and eggs for the boys, and other times I throw cheerios in a bowl with some almond milk. So there’s a large range over here!
Planning and having things on-hand to eat is helpful when the week gets crazy and you’re tired and have no brain cells left to think about what you and your family will be eating! This way, I cram all the ideas onto paper in one sitting, then throughout the week I glance at the menu that is kept on the side of our fridge. Without this menu, I am lost! I see ingredients in my fridge but don’t know what to make with them! #mombrain So once you put the work into making your menu, keep it somewhere in the kitchen so you can keep referring back to it.
It’s Tuesday, and I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to! Or just leave a comment and tell me any tips or tricks you have for planning your weekly menu!
