Traveling with kids isn’t always easy. I love that they get to experience different places and people, but the actual getting there and back is the part that makes most parents cringe. There’s a lot of packing and unpacking and loading the car and entertaining kids, etc. So I’m trying a new thing for packing. Not for me, no I will continue to overpack and not bring the right things. But for my kids!
Since now I’m packing for two kids, but with limited space, I wanted to make sure I had what they both needed without over packing. I did all the laundry so the clothes were ready to be packed. Then I gathered several gallon sized zip locked bags and labeled them. “Jude, Day 1” and “Benji, Day 1” and “Jude, Thanksgiving Day”, etc. One complete outfit went inside each bag and zipped shut.
Then I added Benji’s bags in order, Day 1-5 and then Jude’s, Day 1-5. I had matching outfits two of the days for the boys, then special Thanksgiving day clothes and wanted to make sure the right clothes went on them on the right days.
Once I had the outfits figured out, I added a bag for family photo outfits and one additional bag for “extras”. So I added pants, shirts, and socks to the extra bag for each of the boys.
We used this method for our five-night Thanksgiving break, and Matt and I both loved it. Jude would get food on his shirts, mud on his pants, and everything in between. So it was nice that either Matt or I could run to the suitcase and quickly pull out a bag of exactly what we needed. I plan on doing this same system for our Christmas trip! It worked well and didn’t take up much space. As an added bonus, we could use the empty plastic bags for dirty clothes.
