I am sure you have heard of Stay-cations and vacations (of course). But have you heard of Surprise-a-cations?! NOW YOU HAVE. And that’s what happened this past weekend. The grandfather of all surprise-a-cations.
It was my dear friend, Meredith’s, birthday on Sunday. Apparently her husband and my hubs got together and planned a getaway for all four of us, starting on Sunday. I found out a tidbit of information on Saturday- to pack a bag. That’s it. I just had to be ready after church. The rest unfolded minute by minute. Did I mention I love surprises?! So I was all about this surprise-a-cation.
Meredith had NO IDEA what was going on. She knew it was her birthday and that her husband was acting a little weird after church- driving around, wanting to go shopping (he was trying to stall. But who’s going to believe he really wanted to go shopping?!), and then finally to her birthday lunch. During the same time, Matt and I went to their apartment, picked up their dog, and the secret weekend bags Meredith’s husband packed without her knowing it. Then we swung by our house, picked up Wickett, and were on our way to surprise Meredith at the sandwich shop.
The boys planned a nice weekend trip to a state park in College Corner, Ohio. Doesn’t sound like a destination of great importance, especially if you are from Ohio (like I am) and think Ohio is great and all, but not necessarily a destination for a nice weekend away. Well, get ready to change your mind. Check out Hueston Woods state park, and I think you will start to know what I mean. We both had a one-room cabin that was rustic but still had everything we needed. We had a blast. It was super snowy, but we still got to go to the dog park, hike around a bit, go to a nice birthday dinner at the lodge, and stay up late laughing and playing games.
We slept in the next morning, slowly waking up and warming up, drinking in coffee and nibbling on fruit. What is more relaxing than not setting an alarm and waking up because these sun is up, too? Then we had a full day open to whatever we decided on. And let me tell you, the stuff we decided on was FABULOUS. We drove halfway back home and stopped in Cincinnati to eat some lunch at Tom & Chee, this yummy place that makes special grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. I am not even a fan of tomato soup, but we went anyway because the draw to a grilled cheese with hummus, spinach, tomato, and cucumber was so strong. It did not disappoint.
Happy Birthday Meredith- I hope you had a sweet day and enjoyed our little surprise-a-cation as much as I did!
