The painting has started! Our goal is to have everything finished by next week- let’s see if it actually happens!
Starting a project is always difficult, but you have to just dive right in! Once we picked our paint colors, why wait any longer? Just get going, get dirty and dusty, splash paint on something! Here is how we started moving ahead in our kitchen make-over:
Step 1: Decide what needs to be changed.
For example, we want to add a dishwasher. But a full-sized 24″ dishwasher is too big to fit under our existing countertops. We would have to buy new counters and extend them at least 4″ on one end to accommodate a dishwasher. Well, all that was going to add $1,200 (at least) to our project total. Instead, we are keeping our existing counters and adding a compact dishwasher that is 18″. It fits right under our existing countertops. Yay for compact dishwashers.
Step 2: Buy some paint.
Paint gives you the biggest bang for your buck. A can of paint plus primer (which is what we chose for our cabinets) is about $30. We need two cans, but still adding $60 to the makeover budget is totally worth it when your cabinets are going from being a fleshy pink color to a clean, crisp white.
Step 3: Plan it.
I checked out so many blogs and pictures of how to paint cabinets. Matt drew a diagram of our kitchen so we could number the doors as we took them off. Now we know exactly which cabinet goes where.
Step 4: Get going!
This is the last step. It’s hard to leave the planning step, but it must be done! So move on to the “Get going” step quick before all you end up with are plans!
We took all the doors off the cabinets, removed everything out of the cabinets and into the living room, and went to work sanding all surfaces- inside and out. Matt and i had two electric sanders going at the same time. We wore protective eye wear and face masks. Super stylish.
Next up is taking the hardware off the doors, sanding and painting them, and then hanging them back up. Whew! But painting the cabinets has already made out kitchen look so much brighter! I can’t wait to get the doors up.
